How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. 1To convert JPG to PNG, drag your JPG or JPEG files onto the drop area or click it to browse. Add as many as you like.
  2. 2Make sure PNG is selected as the output format. There is no quality setting because PNG is lossless.
  3. 3Each file converts as soon as it is added, and the card shows the size before and after. PNG files of photographs are usually larger than the JPG.
  4. 4Download a single PNG, or use Download All to save every converted file.

What changes when you convert JPG to PNG

JPG, also called JPEG, stores a picture with lossy compression: it throws away detail the eye is least likely to miss, which makes photographs small. PNG compresses without losing anything and also supports transparency. Converting a JPG to PNG does not bring back detail that was already lost when the JPG was saved, but it stops any further loss, so a PNG copy is a safe way to edit or re-save an image repeatedly.

People change JPG to PNG for practical reasons. Some editors and design tools work best with PNG, a lossless copy is useful as a working file, and PNG is the usual format when a site or app asks for it. If you were hoping the conversion would make a background transparent, note that it will not: a JPG has no transparency to begin with, so the PNG will have the same solid background. Use a background remover or editor for that.

Expect a bigger file. A photograph saved as PNG is often three to ten times the size of the same JPG, because lossless compression cannot shrink photographic detail much. For flat graphics, logos and screenshots the sizes are closer. If your goal is a small file, keep the JPG or use the image compressor; if you need lossless, accept the extra size.

The conversion runs in your browser, using its own decoder and PNG encoder. Your images are not uploaded, nothing is stored, and there is no watermark, sign-up or limit on the number of files.

When people convert JPG to PNG

Editing without more loss

Convert a JPG to PNG before several rounds of editing so each save doesn't lower the quality again.

Apps that need PNG

Many design, game and web tools ask for PNG, so convert JPEG to PNG before importing.

Screenshots and graphics

Turn JPG screenshots into PNG to keep text and lines clean in documents and presentations.

Preparing for transparency work

Start from a PNG when you plan to cut out a background in an editor that saves transparency.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JPG to PNG?

+

Add your JPG files, make sure PNG is the output format and download the results. Batches work too.

Is there a JPG to PNG converter free of charge?

+

Yes. This JPG to PNG converter free of sign-up and watermarks runs in your browser, so you can use JPG to PNG online without uploading a file.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

+

No. It cannot restore detail already lost in the JPG, but it prevents further loss when the image is saved again.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

+

No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. Remove the background in an editor if you need it transparent.

Why is the PNG bigger than the JPG?

+

PNG is lossless, and lossless compression saves much less on photographs than JPG's lossy compression does.

Are my images uploaded?

+

No. The conversion happens in your browser and nothing leaves your device.
