What lorem ipsum is and why designers use it
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin based on a passage from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. It has been used as filler text in printing since at least the 1500s and carried over into desktop publishing and web design. Because it isn't readable English, reviewers look at the typography, spacing and layout instead of getting distracted by what the words say.
This placeholder text generator builds text from the traditional lorem ipsum vocabulary rather than repeating the same fixed passage. Sentences run from 6 to 16 words, some get a comma partway through, and paragraphs hold 4 to 7 sentences. That gives the uneven line lengths and ragged paragraph edges of real copy, which is what you need to judge how a layout will hold up.
Words mode gives you exactly the number of words you ask for, which is handy for testing character limits, truncation and how a card behaves with a 20-word versus a 60-word description. Sentences mode returns a single block. Paragraphs mode separates paragraphs with a blank line in plain text, or wraps each one in a <p> element in HTML mode so you can paste it straight into a template.
Lorem ipsum text should never reach production. A quick search of your codebase for 'lorem' before a release catches the stragglers, and it's worth replacing filler with realistic content as early as you can, since real headlines and product names are usually longer than you expect.
When developers reach for it
Building UI components
Fill cards, modals and list items with text of different lengths to check wrapping, truncation and overflow.
Mockups and prototypes
Use it as a dummy text generator for wireframes and design files, so stakeholders comment on layout rather than wording.
Seeding test data
Generate descriptions or blog bodies for fixtures and seed scripts, with an exact word count when a field has a limit.
Testing typography
Compare font sizes, line heights and measure across breakpoints with realistic paragraph shapes.
Frequently asked questions
What does lorem ipsum mean?
+
It's a mangled excerpt from Cicero's 'On the Ends of Good and Evil'. 'Dolorem ipsum' means 'pain itself'; the placeholder version drops letters and words, so as a whole it doesn't mean anything.
Can I get lorem ipsum HTML with <p> tags?
+
Yes. Select the HTML format and each paragraph is wrapped in <p> tags, ready to paste into a template or CMS source view.
Is the generated text different each time?
+
Yes. The lorem generator picks words at random from the lorem ipsum vocabulary on every run, so clicking Generate gives a new variation. With 'Start with "Lorem ipsum…"' ticked, the opening phrase stays the same.
How do I get an exact number of words?
+
Choose Words and enter the count. The output contains exactly that many words, which the counter under the text confirms.
How many lorem ipsum paragraphs can I generate?
+
Up to 100 paragraphs at a time, each with 4 to 7 sentences. Sentences mode goes up to 500 and Words mode up to 5,000.
