Animated and still files both work. Animations over 400 frames are cut at 400.

How to convert WebP to GIF

  1. 1To convert WebP to GIF, leave the switch on WebP to GIF, then drag your files onto the WebP files box or click it to choose them. Animated and still WebP images both work.
  2. 2Choose Colours per frame and Looping. 256 colours looks best; fewer colours make a smaller file. Pick Loop forever or Play once.
  3. 3Each file converts as soon as you add it. The card shows an animated preview, the size, the number of frames and how the file size changed.
  4. 4Click the file name to save the GIF. To go the other way, switch to GIF to WebP, add your GIFs and set the WebP quality before downloading.

WebP, GIF and what changes when you convert

WebP is a modern image format from Google that can hold a still picture or a full animation, usually at a much smaller size than the same thing as a GIF. GIF is older and far less efficient, but it works in almost every app, chat client, email and website, which is why people want to save a WebP as a GIF when an animated WebP will not play or upload. This converter reads every frame of the WebP, with its timing, and writes them into a standard animated GIF.

Converting WebP to GIF involves a trade-off. A GIF can use only 256 colours per frame and has just on-or-off transparency, so photographic frames can look slightly banded and soft edges become hard ones. The tool picks the best 256 colours for each frame separately, which gives better results than one palette for the whole animation. File size will usually grow, sometimes a lot, because GIF compression is much weaker than WebP.

The reverse, GIF to WebP, goes the other way. As a GIF to WebP converter, the tool re-encodes each GIF frame as a WebP picture and packs the frames into an animated WebP with the original delays. The result is normally much smaller than the GIF and has smoother colour and partial transparency. The quality slider sets the trade-off between size and detail. WebP encoding relies on your browser, so it needs Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

Both directions run on your device. Your files are decoded and encoded in the browser, never uploaded, and there is no watermark or limit. Reading every frame of an animation needs a browser with the ImageDecoder feature, which Chrome, Edge and Firefox have; where it is missing the tool can only read the first frame and tells you so.

When people convert between WebP and GIF

Sharing where WebP fails

Convert an animated WebP to GIF for messengers, emails, forums and slide software that only show GIFs.

Saving images from the web

Many sites serve animations as WebP. Save the WebP as a GIF to keep a copy that opens everywhere.

Shrinking GIFs

Use GIF to WebP to make an animated image much smaller for a website, then keep the GIF as the fallback.

Editing animations

Older editors open GIF but not animated WebP, so a conversion makes the file editable.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an animated WebP to GIF?

+

Add the WebP file in the WebP to GIF mode. Every frame and its delay are kept in the GIF you download.

How do I save WebP as GIF?

+

Open the converter in WebP to GIF mode, add the file and download the result. That is all it takes to save a WebP as a GIF.

Can I convert GIF to WebP too?

+

Yes. Switch to GIF to WebP, add your GIF and download an animated WebP, usually much smaller than the original.

Why is the GIF bigger than my WebP?

+

GIF compresses far less efficiently than WebP and is limited to 256 colours per frame. Choosing fewer colours reduces the size.

Does the GIF keep transparency?

+

Yes, but GIF supports only fully transparent or fully opaque pixels, so soft or semi-transparent edges become hard.

Does the converter work with still WebP images?

+

Yes. A still WebP becomes a one-frame GIF and a still GIF becomes a normal WebP picture.

Is my file uploaded?

+

No. Conversion happens in your browser and your file never leaves your device.
