How to count words in a text
- 1Type or paste your text into the Your text box. Click Paste to read from the clipboard or Sample to try the tool with example text.
- 2The word count appears at the top of the Counts panel as you type, next to the character count, sentences and paragraphs.
- 3Use the reading time and speaking time cards to estimate how long it takes to read the text silently or say it aloud.
- 4Check the Keyword density table to see which words you repeat most and what percentage of the text each one makes up. Common filler words are left out.
- 5Edit until the numbers match your target, then copy the text back into your document. Click Clear to start over.
How this word counter works
A word counter splits text into words and counts them. Doing that well is harder than splitting on spaces. This tool uses the same word-boundary rules as your browser's text engine, so a contraction like don't is one word, a number counts as a word, punctuation and dashes never do, and languages without spaces between words, such as Chinese and Japanese, are segmented properly instead of being counted as one giant word.
Alongside the word count you get characters (with a separate character counter page if you need the version without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, unique words and the average word length. Sentences are detected from terminal punctuation, and paragraphs are blocks of text separated by a blank line. Reading time uses an average adult silent reading speed of about 238 words per minute, and speaking time assumes roughly 150 words per minute, so it works as a quick reading time calculator for blog posts, speeches and video scripts.
The keyword density table lists your most-repeated words with their counts and share of the total. It ignores very common words like the and of so the list shows topic words. Use it as a word checker for repetition, for example to spot an overused word in an essay, or to see whether the focus keyword of an article appears often enough without being stuffed. Density is a rough guide, not a ranking rule.
Everything is calculated in your browser while you type. Drafts, essays and confidential documents are never uploaded or stored.

Frequently asked questions
How does the word counter decide what a word is?
+
It follows the Unicode word-boundary rules built into your browser. Letters and numbers form words, contractions and hyphenated parts are handled sensibly, and punctuation is ignored.
Does it count words in other languages?
+
Yes. Accented and non-Latin scripts work, and languages written without spaces, such as Chinese, Japanese and Thai, are split with the browser's dictionary-based segmentation where available.
How is reading time calculated?
+
The word count is divided by 238 words per minute for silent reading and 150 for speaking aloud. Real speed varies with the reader and the material, so treat it as an estimate.
Can I get the character count too?
+
Yes, the character count is shown next to the word count. The Character Counter page adds a count without spaces, byte size and limits for X, SMS and meta descriptions.
Does this word count checker store my text?
+
No. The text is analysed locally in your browser and never sent to a server.
