How to convert WebP to PNG
- 1Check that PNG is selected under Output Format. It is preselected on this page, and the quality slider is disabled because PNG is lossless.
- 2Drag your .webp files onto the Drop Images area, or click it to choose them. You can add several at once.
- 3Wait a moment while each file is decoded and re-encoded. The Results list shows the dimensions and the PNG's file size next to the original.
- 4Click the download icon on a row to save that PNG, or Download All to save every converted file. Each keeps its original name with a .png extension.
What changes when a WebP becomes a PNG
WebP is Google's web image format. Many sites now serve WebP even when the original upload was a JPG or PNG, so right-clicking an image and choosing Save image as often gives you a .webp file. That's fine in a browser, but plenty of software still refuses it: older versions of Photoshop and other editors, some CMS and marketplace upload forms, office suites and print services. PNG opens everywhere.
Transparency carries over. WebP stores an 8-bit alpha channel in both its lossy and lossless modes, and PNG supports the same 8-bit alpha, so a logo or cut-out with a transparent background is still transparent after conversion. The converter draws the image onto a transparent canvas and exports it as PNG without filling the background.
Expect a bigger file. PNG compresses losslessly with DEFLATE, which is efficient for flat graphics and screenshots but not for photos. A lossy WebP photo converted to PNG commonly ends up several times larger. That size buys you nothing in quality: if the WebP was lossy, its compression artifacts are copied into the PNG pixel for pixel, not repaired. Converting is about compatibility, and further edits won't lose any more detail.
A few things don't survive. Animated WebPs are decoded to their first frame, so you get a still PNG. Metadata such as EXIF and embedded color profiles isn't copied, and the output uses 8 bits per channel in sRGB, which matches how the image looked in your browser. If you need the image smaller rather than more compatible, convert to JPG instead, or keep the WebP.
Why people convert WebP to PNG
Editing a downloaded image
Open an image you saved from a website in an editor that doesn't read WebP, and keep editing without adding more compression loss.
Logos and icons with transparency
Get a transparent PNG for slides, documents or design tools that don't take WebP.
Upload forms that reject WebP
Many marketplaces, CMSs and job or government portals accept only PNG or JPG.
Screenshots and UI mockups
Flat-colour graphics stay pin-sharp in PNG, and the size increase is usually small.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?
+
Yes. Both formats support an 8-bit alpha channel, and the converter never fills the background, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels stay that way.
Will the PNG look better than the WebP?
+
No. If the WebP was lossy, its artifacts are already baked into the pixels and PNG preserves them exactly. The PNG looks the same; it just opens in more places.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the WebP?
+
PNG is lossless and was designed for graphics, so photographic content compresses poorly. A photo can easily grow several times in size. For photos, WebP to JPG gives a much smaller file.
Can I convert an animated WebP to PNG?
+
You'll get the first frame as a still PNG. The browser's image decoder used here returns a single frame, and standard PNG has no animation.
Can I save WebP as PNG without installing anything?
+
Yes. This WebP to PNG online converter needs nothing but your browser, so it works the same on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS and phones.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
+
No. The WebP is decoded and re-encoded as PNG by your own browser, so the files never leave your device and there's no size limit beyond your device's memory.
