How to crop an image online

  1. 1Drop a photo onto the Source area or click to browse. The tool reads its size and shows it with a crop box over the whole picture.
  2. 2Drag the box to move it, or pull any of the eight handles to resize it. Pick an Aspect ratio such as 1:1 to crop image to square, or choose Custom and type your own ratio.
  3. 3For pixel-exact work, type values into the X, Y, Width and Height fields. Click the crop box and use the arrow keys to nudge it by 1 px, or hold Shift for 10 px.
  4. 4Choose PNG, JPEG or WebP as the output format and set the Quality slider for JPEG and WebP.
  5. 5Click Download crop. The file is saved with the cropped size in its name, for example holiday-cropped-1080x1080.jpg.

How this image cropper works

Cropping cuts away the edges of a picture so only the part you keep remains. Nothing is resampled: the pixels inside the box are copied one-to-one onto a new canvas of exactly the box's size, so a 600 by 400 crop gives you a 600 by 400 image with no softening. If you also need a different final size, crop first and then run the result through the Image Resizer.

Phone photos usually store their pixels sideways and add an EXIF orientation tag that tells viewers to rotate them. This tool applies that tag when it opens the file, so a portrait photo appears upright and the crop box, the X and Y values and the exported file all use the orientation you actually see. The saved crop does not carry the old tag, so it cannot end up rotated twice in another app.

The aspect ratio buttons keep the box locked to a shape while you drag, which is how you crop a picture for a profile photo (1:1), a slide or video thumbnail (16:9) or a phone story (9:16). The Custom option accepts any ratio, for example 4:5 for an Instagram portrait or 3:2 for a print. Transparent PNGs stay transparent when you export PNG or WebP; JPEG cannot store transparency, so those areas turn white.

All of the work happens on a canvas in your browser tab. The photo is never sent to a server, which keeps private pictures private and means very large images crop as fast as your device can decode them.

When people crop images

Profile pictures and avatars

Crop picture files to a square with the 1:1 preset so a face sits in the middle and the upload form does not cut it off.

Social media and thumbnails

Use 16:9 for video thumbnails and link previews, 9:16 for stories and shorts, or a custom 4:5 for portrait feed posts.

Trimming screenshots

Crop PNG screenshots to just the window or error message you want to share, and keep them lossless by exporting PNG.

Cleaning up before upload

Crop JPG photos to remove borders, backgrounds or bystanders, then compress them so they load quickly on your site.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop a picture to a square?

+

Choose the 1:1 aspect ratio. The crop box becomes the largest square that fits your photo, and you can drag or resize it while it stays square.

Does cropping reduce image quality?

+

No. The pixels inside the crop box are copied exactly. Quality only drops if you export JPEG or WebP with a low Quality setting, so use PNG when you need a lossless crop.

Why does my phone photo crop correctly here?

+

The tool reads the EXIF orientation stored by your camera and rotates the picture before you crop, so what you see is what you get.

Can I crop a PNG and keep it transparent?

+

Yes. Export as PNG or WebP and the transparent areas inside the crop stay transparent. JPEG has no transparency, so it fills those areas with white.

Can I crop to an exact pixel size?

+

Yes. Type the Width and Height you need, then move the box with the X and Y fields or the arrow keys. With an aspect ratio selected, changing one value updates the other.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

+

No. Cropping happens in your browser with the canvas API, so your picture never leaves your device.
