How to create a favicon

  1. 1Pick Text or emoji and type one to four characters for a favicon from text, or switch to Image or SVG and drop your logo. A PNG to favicon conversion works the same way as an SVG.
  2. 2Set the background colour (or tick Transparent background), the shape (square, rounded or circle) and the padding around your artwork.
  3. 3Check the previews. They show the 16, 32 and 48 pixel icons used in browser tabs, the Apple touch icon and both Android icons exactly as they will be exported.
  4. 4Fill in the app name, short name, theme colour and the folder path where you will host the files, so the manifest and HTML use the right URLs.
  5. 5Click Download ZIP, upload the files to your site, and paste the HTML from the second panel into your page's head. Use the favicon.ico button if you only need the ICO file.

What is in a favicon pack

A modern site needs more than one icon file, which is why a good site icon generator has to output several formats. The classic favicon.ico lives in the site root and is still requested by many browsers, feed readers and crawlers. It can hold several sizes in one file, and this tool packs 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions into it. Each size is stored as a PNG inside the ICO container, which every current browser and Windows version understands and which keeps transparency intact. If you came looking for a PNG to ICO converter, that is exactly what the file builder does for your image.

Three more files cover phones. As an Apple touch icon generator, it exports the 180 pixel icon that iOS uses when someone adds your site to their home screen; iOS paints transparent areas black, so this tool always gives that icon a solid background. The 192 and 512 pixel Android icons are listed in the site.webmanifest file, which also holds your app name, theme colour and splash colour for installable web apps.

This favicon maker draws every size from your source separately rather than shrinking one big picture, so small icons stay as crisp as the browser's canvas allows. Letters and emoji are centred by their measured outline, and artwork is scaled to fit inside the padding you choose. For the sharpest result at 16 pixels, use a simple, high-contrast design with little detail and enough padding that nothing is clipped by the shape.

Everything is built in your browser, including the ICO container and the ZIP archive. Your logo is never uploaded, and no account is needed.

When developers use it

Launching a new site

Generate the whole set of icons in one step and paste the HTML into your layout instead of resizing images by hand.

Prototypes and side projects

Type a letter or an emoji, pick a background colour and ship a recognisable tab icon in seconds.

Installable web apps

Get the 192 and 512 pixel icons and a matching site.webmanifest for a progressive web app.

Replacing an old favicon

Turn a new SVG or PNG logo into a fresh favicon.ico, an Apple touch icon and updated sizes for every device.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes does the favicon pack include?

+

favicon.ico with 16, 32 and 48 pixel images, separate 16 and 32 pixel PNGs, a 180 pixel Apple touch icon, and 192 and 512 pixel Android icons, plus site.webmanifest.

Where do I put the files?

+

Upload them to your site's public folder, normally the root, and paste the HTML into your head. If you host them in a subfolder, set the folder path field first so the links and manifest match.

Can I make a favicon from an emoji?

+

Yes. Type the emoji in the Text or emoji field. It is drawn with your system's emoji font, then centred and scaled to fit.

Does it work with SVG logos?

+

Yes. Drop an SVG and it is rasterised at each icon size. Make sure the SVG has a viewBox so it scales correctly.

Why is the Apple touch icon not transparent?

+

iOS fills transparent pixels with black on the home screen, so the 180 pixel icon is always exported with a solid background, white if you chose transparent.

Is my image uploaded?

+

No. The icons, the ICO file and the ZIP are all created in your browser, and nothing leaves your device.
