Making an animated GIF from photos or images
An animated GIF is a stack of pictures shown one after another, each for a set time. That makes it easy to turn a series of photos, screenshots or drawings into a short looping clip with no video editing: a product from different angles, the steps of a process, a flipbook drawing or a slideshow of memories. This free animated GIF generator creates the file from photo to GIF with the controls that matter, and no software to install.
Timing is set in milliseconds. A delay of 100 ms is ten frames per second, 200 ms is five, and 1000 ms holds a picture for a full second. Most browsers and apps treat anything below 20 ms as 100 ms, so shorter delays are limited to 20 ms. You can set one delay for the whole animation and then override it on any frame, for example to hold the last picture longer before the loop restarts.
Size matters because GIF is a heavy format: every pixel of every frame counts. The width box scales all frames to the same size and works out the height from the first picture, so a 4000 px photo doesn't produce a huge file. Pictures with another shape can be fitted inside the frame, filled and cropped to cover it, or stretched; the background behind a fitted picture can be transparent, white or black. Choosing fewer colours per frame shrinks the file further, at the cost of smoother gradients.
The GIF is made inside your browser using an open-source encoder. Your pictures are never uploaded, there is no watermark and no account, and you can make as many GIFs as you like. Looping can be endless, once, or a number of plays that you choose. If you want to turn an existing animated WebP into a GIF instead, use the WebP to GIF converter.
