How to convert PNG to ICO
- 1To convert PNG to ICO, drag your image onto the Image box or click it to browse. PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and SVG files all work.
- 2Choose which Sizes go into the icon. The Standard preset packs 16, 32, 48 and 256 px; Web favicon keeps just 16, 32 and 48; or tick any sizes you like.
- 3If the picture isn't square, pick how it should fit: Fit inside keeps all of it with transparent margins, Fill and crop covers the whole icon, and Stretch squeezes it to a square.
- 4Check the previews of every size, then click Download to save the .ico file. Each size is drawn separately from your original, so small sizes stay as sharp as they can be.
How an ICO file works
An ICO file is a small container that holds several versions of the same icon at different sizes. Windows picks the one that fits the place the icon is shown: 16 px in a title bar or browser tab, 32 px on the taskbar, 48 px in a folder and 256 px for large previews. Packing them together is why an icon looks crisp everywhere, instead of a single image being stretched or shrunk. This ICO maker draws each size straight from your image and writes them all into one file.
The icons inside are stored as PNG images, the modern form of the format that Windows has supported since Vista and that every browser reads. That keeps full 32-bit colour and smooth transparency, so a logo with a see-through background keeps its edges instead of getting a white or black box around it. It also means the file is a faithful copy of your artwork, not a reduced palette version.
For the best result start from a square image that is at least as large as the biggest size you choose, ideally 256 px or more. If the picture is smaller than a size you tick, the tool tells you that size will be enlarged and may look soft. Very detailed artwork often needs simplifying to read clearly at 16 px, so check the small previews before you download.
This icon converter works on your device. The image is read and resized by your browser, the .ico is assembled in memory, and nothing is sent to a server. You can use the file as a website favicon, for a Windows shortcut or application, or anywhere an .ico is required.
When people need an ICO file
Website favicons
Browsers still request /favicon.ico. Convert your logo to a 16, 32 and 48 px icon and upload it to your site root.
Windows shortcuts and apps
Give a shortcut, installer or desktop application its own icon with a 256 px version for large views.
Changing folder icons
Windows folder and drive icons need .ico files, so convert a PNG to ICO to customise them.
Development and design projects
Many frameworks and installers, from Electron to NSIS, expect an .ico built from your PNG artwork.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert PNG to ICO?
+
Add your PNG, pick the sizes to include, and click Download. The result is one .ico with every size inside.
Which sizes should an ICO include?
+
For a website favicon, 16, 32 and 48 px are enough. For Windows apps and shortcuts, also include 256 px.
Does the ICO keep transparency?
+
Yes. Transparent areas of a PNG, WebP or SVG stay transparent in the icon.
Can I convert to ICO from a JPG or SVG?
+
Yes. JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP and SVG files are accepted as well as PNG. A JPG has no transparency, so it becomes a full square.
Is this ICO file converter free and private?
+
Yes. It is free, has no sign-up, and your image never leaves your browser.
