How PDF pages become images

A PDF describes pages as text, shapes and pictures, not as pixels. To convert a PDF to images, each page has to be drawn, or rendered, at a chosen size, and the result saved as a picture. This tool uses the same open-source rendering engine as the Firefox PDF viewer to draw each page onto a canvas in your browser, then saves it as a JPG or PNG. Because the page is drawn on a white background, pages with transparent areas still come out looking right.

Resolution decides how sharp the result is. A page is measured in points, 72 to the inch, so 72 dpi gives an image about the size of the page on screen, 150 dpi is a good balance for sharing and reading, and 300 dpi is the usual choice for print. Higher numbers make larger files and take longer, and very large pages are scaled down automatically so the browser doesn't run out of memory.

Choose JPG for photos and scanned pages: files are small and the Quality slider trades size against detail. Choose PNG when you want lossless output for text, line art and screenshots, which is why people look for a PDF to PNG converter as often as a PDF to JPEG one. Images are named with the page number, such as report-page-01.jpg, so they sort in order.

Everything runs in your browser. The PDF is read locally, so contracts and personal documents are not uploaded, and there is no page limit. If a file is password-protected, the tool asks for the password and uses it only inside your tab to read the pages.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to JPG?

+

Add the PDF, keep JPG selected, choose a resolution and click Convert. Download each page or all of them as a ZIP.

Can I convert PDF to PNG instead?

+

Yes. Switch Image format to PNG for lossless images, which suit text and line art best.

What resolution should I pick?

+

Use 72 dpi for screen-sized images, 150 dpi for everyday sharing and 300 dpi for printing. Higher resolution means a larger file.

Can I convert only some pages?

+

Yes. Type the pages you want in the Pages box, for example 2-4, 9, before you convert.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. Pages are rendered in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
