How to transcribe audio or video
- 1Drop an audio or video file onto the page, or click to browse. To transcribe video, choose the video file itself: MP4, WebM and MOV work in most browsers, as do MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG and FLAC.
- 2Choose Fast (Whisper Tiny) or Accurate (Whisper Base), and pick the language that is spoken in the recording.
- 3Click Start transcribing. The first run downloads the speech model, which your browser then keeps for next time; a progress bar shows the download and then the transcription.
- 4Switch between Plain text, SRT and VTT, then download or copy the result. Use Translate these subtitles to send the SRT to the AI Subtitle Translator, or Edit timings to fine-tune it in the Subtitle Editor.
Private audio to text transcription that runs on your device
Most online video transcription and audio services upload your file to their servers, then limit how many minutes you get for free. This tool takes a different route: it downloads Whisper, the open-source speech to text model released by OpenAI, and runs it in your browser with Hugging Face's Transformers.js. Your audio is decoded and transcribed locally. Only the model files are fetched from the internet, and once your browser has cached them, later runs start straight away.
On browsers with WebGPU (recent Chrome and Edge, and Safari on newer devices) the model runs on your graphics card, which is much faster. Everywhere else it runs on the CPU with WebAssembly. That works, but expect it to take a while for long recordings, and keep the tab open until it finishes. The Fast model is a smaller download and quicker; the Accurate model copes better with accents, background noise and languages other than English.
Whisper has a known weakness: given silence or music, it sometimes invents text such as "Thanks for watching!". To avoid that, the tool first scans the audio for stretches that are loud enough to be speech and sends only those to the model, in pieces of up to 28 seconds. Quiet gaps are skipped, a lone filler line in a piece is dropped, and phrases the model repeats over and over are collapsed. The timestamps Whisper returns are then placed back on the file's timeline and long lines are wrapped into subtitles of at most two 42-character lines.
Choose the spoken language before you start; the model doesn't detect it on its own here, and English is assumed by default. The transcript won't be perfect, especially with overlapping voices or heavy accents, so read it through before you publish captions. The editor and translator linked below take the SRT straight from this page.

Frequently asked questions
Is my audio or video uploaded?
+
No. The file is read and transcribed in your browser. The only downloads are the Whisper model files from Hugging Face (and the WebAssembly runtime), which contain no information about you or your file.
Is there a length or minute limit?
+
There's no minute quota. Files can be up to 500 MB and 3 hours long, because the whole recording has to fit in your browser's memory. Long files take longer on a CPU, so WebGPU helps a lot.
How big is the download?
+
On the CPU, the Fast model is about 41 MB and the Accurate model about 77 MB. On WebGPU, a higher-precision version is used, about 120 MB and 206 MB. Your browser caches the model, so it is only downloaded once.
Which languages are supported?
+
Whisper understands dozens of languages, and the menu lists over 30 of the most common, including Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Arabic, Japanese and Chinese. Pick the language that is spoken; the Accurate model gives noticeably better results outside English.
Can I turn a video into an SRT file?
+
Yes, it works as an SRT file generator. Choose the video file, start transcribing, then select SRT and click Download. The timings come from the speech in the video, so the file lines up when you load it as a subtitle track.
Why does it say no speech was found?
+
The tool looks for parts of the recording that are clearly louder than the background. If the whole file is silent, extremely quiet, or the browser decoded no audio track, there's nothing to transcribe. Try raising the volume or using a different file.
